Well construction and pump installation bonds must be in the amount of $20,000 and can be purchased instantly online through ContractorBonds.com for a minimum cost of $100. However, these bonds are set to expire annually on January 31, so the price you pay may vary depending on the term of your bond.

How to become a licensed well driller and pump installer

Contractors looking to become licensed as a well driller or pump installer in Colorado can request a licensing package through the Board of Examiners by calling (303) 866-3581 x8220, emailing [email protected], or accessing it online at Public Information.

Information and materials sent as part of the licensing package include:

  • Well Construction and/or Pump Installation Contractor's License Application Form GWS-26

  • Information on the licensing process and instructions for the completion of the license application

  • Verification of Employment & Experience Form

  • Information on obtaining study guides for Contractor Certification Exams through NGWA

    • Well driller and pump installer contractors must have two years of work experience to be considered for examination in the area(s) indicated on the license application.

  • Colorado Water Well Construction Rules and Regulations

    • There is a fee of $10 for a printed copy of the Water Well Construction Rules and Regulations.

  • Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) 37-91-101 et seq., governing the licensing of well
    construction and pump installation contractors

Contractor's License Application Form GWS-26 must be completed in its entirety before being submitted to the Board. The following nonrefundable fees are required with the application:

  • $20 for a well construction contractor’s license

  • $20 for a pump installation contractor’s license

    • Nonresident fees are $50 for each of the licenses above.

The completed license application must be submitted with the applicable fees and an experience affidavit.

Upon receipt of a completed application, the Board of Examiners will, at its regularly scheduled meetings on the first Monday in February, May, August, and November, review those materials to determine whether your work experience meets the statutory requirements.

After being licensed, contractors must then submit their Contractor Bond — alternately, a Certificate of Deposit may be completed in lieu of a bond. Contractors may also need to submit a Letter of Credit and a Rig Registration.
